Rowe Returns to Victory Lane $1,500 Richer as 31st Mr. Pathfinder Bank SBS

OSWEGO, NY (July 22, 2023) - Former SBS Classic Champion Cameron Rowe made his long awaited return to Oswego Speedway victory lane and walked away $1,500 richer with the title of Mr. Pathfinder Bank SBS going to the driver of the No. 77 on Saturday night.

Rowe started on the outside pole, got the jump on Mike Fowler, and withstood several restarts throughout the wild 35-lapper to win the fifth feature of his career at Oswego and first since all the way back in 2012.

“I don’t even know how we held them all off tonight,” said an excited Rowe in victory lane. “We had that caution with a few to go and I got into the 66 when he slowed down, so I have a bunch of front wing damage and the car was toed out a mile, but Darren Shuman ran me good. I have to give him that. The guys seemed to race well overall tonight. Our car was great tonight. It's the fastest its been all year. I have to thank J&S Paving and Rich Wirth, Robbie Pullen from Pullen’s Plumbing, and FFB Race Chassis. Also a special thanks to Lighthouse Lanes. They have been with me since 2011 and I actually led every lap of this race that year up until 3 to go. We finally got this one.”

Last season’s Rookie of the Year DJ Shuman started in third and kept pace with Rowe for the duration, picking up his second podium finish of 2023 in the MDR Motorsports No. 62.

“I thought we had a hot rod when we came here for practice today,” mentioned Shuman. “Then, we put new tires on and it all went out the window and the crew made a bunch of adjustments and rallied to try to get us freed up a bit. I gave Cameron everything I had. We were tight with him, but I didn’t have anything for him. A couple of those double file restarts I thought maybe I had a shot, but he raced me clean and I raced him clean and we’re happy with the second.”

First-time winner two weeks back, Tony DeStevens, drove a patient race, and found himself working on Shuman for third as the laps wound down. The No. 24 came home third for the teenaged driver’s second podium in a row.

“I saw DJ’s car going away, but mine was something to deal with the whole race,” DeStevens said. “I thought i was going to get him at the end and I probably could have drove it in, but I’m really happy with a podium coming off the win a couple weeks ago.”

With Fowler and Rowe leading the field to green, the first caution flag came out on lap 8 just as Rowe built his lead - for a spin by Griffin Miller after contact from Jesse Bearup. Both drivers were able to continue.

On the restart, DeStevens; who started in fourth, drove around the outside of Fowler to settle into third, dropping Fowler back another position.

Greg O’Connor was next to attempt the high side move on Fowler one lap later, but the two got together and a parking lot ensued in turn 1 with Fowler, Noah Ratcliff, Andrew Schartner, Brad Haynes, Drew Pascuzzi, and Bearup all involved.

Schartner, Pascuzzi, Bearup, and Fowler all sustained heavy damage, while Ratcliff and Haynes were able to make repairs and continue.

After a lengthy cleanup, it was again Rowe and Shuman leading the field back to green for the restart as the front three were able to build distance on the rest of the field, including O’Connor and Danny K, who were battling for fourth and fifth.

The race stayed clean and green for the next 19 laps until a spin by Steven Bradshaw with 7 to go and another by Ratcliff with 3 to go bunched the field up twice more.

Rowe had to restart perfectly to keep Shuman at bay and was able to drive away enroute to an emotional win with Shuman and DeStevens not far behind while O’Connor and Kapuscinski completed the top five.

Miller, Haynes, Jake Brown, Greg Richardson, and Ratcliff rounded out the top ten.

Oswego Speedway is off next Saturday night, July 29 for Oswego Harborfest and the ISMA / MSS Hy-Miler Nationals at Sandusky Speedway in Ohio.

The next scheduled event at the Steel Palace is ‘Retro Night’ on Saturday, August 5th, featuring Twin 40-lap features for the Novelis Supermodifieds.
