Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame  Fulton, NY - Bob was one of the original competitors in the 1992 inaugural season of the Limited Supermodified Division. He won the Limited Division Championship in 1993 and racked up a total of 14 wins in that division. A switch to the supermodified division in 1997, driving the Darcy Kerfien car, led to 13 more feature wins including back-to-back “Mr. Supermodified” title events in 1999 and 2000.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame  Mexico, NY - Since starting in 1995, Mike has achieved success in every facet of the Limited Supermodified division. Highlighted by back-to-back Track titles in 2003 and 2004, Mike has earned 15 wins as of 2008 which ranks him among the all time winningest drivers in the division. His accomplishments also include victories in the prestigious “Mr. Small Block Supermodified” title event and the Budweiser SBS Classic event on Labor Day weekend. Mike ran a season of supermodifieds in 1999 with the Tim Proud owned #22 and garnered a top ten point finish along with Supermodified Rookie of the Year honors.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame  Liverpool, NY - Began driving supermodifieds at 17-years old in 1978 after his father Tom purchased a former Shampine 8ball super. In just a few short years Doug established himself as one of the all-time great Oswego competitors. Doug won back-to-back Track Championships and Classics in 1981 and 1982, amassing an incredible 24 wins out of 35 features in this time period. Temporarily leaving supermodifieds after the ‘83 season, Doug went on to race in NASCAR’s most elite division before returning to his short track roots. More success in the modified division and again in the supermodifieds would be added to his name in the succeeding years.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame  Oswego, NY - A lifetime supporter of supermodified racing at Oswego Speedway, Jimmy was one of the founding members of the Eagles Fan Club in the early seventies and was also program editor for the EAGLE at that time. Later in the seventies and early eighties Jimmy tried his hand at being a car owner, fielding a Howard Conkey Show Car Chassis for popular driver Ronnie Wallace. The Ferlito Farm on Route 104 W. has always been a welcoming stop over point for many Canadian and Ohio Racing teams, most notably the Mackereths and the Gibsons. In recent years Ferlito has become involved in forming the successful Oswego Old-Timers Reunion, held every year in mid-July.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame  Oswego, NY - Has been involved in supermodified racing media relations for more than 25 years. From her position at Speedway Press, Carol has been editor of the EAGLE program for many years, coordinating all the writer’s stories, speedway news announcements as well as current sponsor information. She is also an accomplished writer in her own right, fielding a weekly column in Gater News, as well as guest articles in national open-wheeled magazines. Carol is also the ISMA traveling supermodified organization’s media person and is responsible for all their pre and post-race information in the newspapers and on the web site. On Saturday nights at Oswego Carol can be found in the victory lane area helping to coordinate post race photos and interviews.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame  Liverpool, NY - For forty years and still counting, Jerry has been the chief pit steward at Oswego, coordinating the racing activity on the playing field. Jerry’s primary responsibilities of registering the competitors and making sure they’re ready for assigned races is just a fraction of what he does on a Saturday night. Part father, part sheriff - Jerry has earned the respect and friendship of all the competitors over his long career in the trenches.

George was responsible for maintaining the physical grounds of the speedway as well as managing all the concession stands for nearly 50 years. His Hofmann Hot Dogs came almost as famous at the speedway itself.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame  Oswego, NY – One of the Founders of the Oswego Speedway and Vice-President of the operation for over 40 years. Bill also served as the Chief Technical Inspector for many years. The easy going Willie was one of the most well liked and respected officials in his long tenure at the speedway.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame  Syracuse, NY – Pilot of the famous 10pins race car, “Swifty” was the “godfather” of drivers in Oswego Speedway history. He was the winningest driver of the modified days of the ‘50’s, earning five Track Championship and one Classic, then spearheaded the change to supermodifieds. After taking a backseat to the Michigan invasion of supermodified competitors for several seasons, Swift reemerged as one of the best drivers, winning three more Track Titles and FIVE more Classics. His twenty-five year career produced 83 feature wins, (second only to Jimmy Shampine), eight Track Championships and six Classic Wins - both of which are records.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame  Fulton, NY – Driver of the yellow No. 3 stock car, “Smiling” Eddie was one of the most popular and top competitors of the 50’s stock car days at Oswego. His innovative and mechanical prowess coupled with a great driving ability produced three Track Championships in ‘57, ‘69 and ‘60. Ed Sr.’s total feature win count of 33 puts him among the top ten all time drivers. His racing career was cut short in 1961 with a serious racing accident. Ed returned a decade later to help his son, Ed Jr. establish his Oswego racing career.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame  Liverpool, NY – Driver of the green Shamrock 6 car, “Irish Jack” was a popular competitor of the fifties stock car era who made the successful transition to the supermodifieds in the ‘60’s. Murphy won the ‘52 Track Championship, the ‘58 “Class B” Championship and won the first International Classic in ’57. Irish Jack is the only driver to win features in two different divisions on the same night of competition at Oswego. His feature win total, which encompassed wins on the dirt and asphalt of the old track and on the new larger speedway, totaled 26, ranking him among the top drivers. While his racing career spanned twenty plus years, Murph’s involvement in the supermodified sport as a fuel distributor and ISMA officer exceeds 40 years.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame  Clay, NY – Pilot of the “green-machine 8-ball”, Jimmy was Oswego’s most successful supermodified driver and owner of all time. Jim purchased Nolan Swift’s championship winning modified to start his career in ‘62, but nobody told him the track was switching to supermodifieds! He learned from that experience that in order to be a champion you had to build your own equipment. From humble beginnings at both building supermodifieds and driving them, Jimmy Shampine slowly emerged into the most prolific new design supermodified car builder as well as a championship caliber driver. He “owned” the ‘70s at Oswego, winning 77 features out of 206 run (a 38% win ratio) and another 69 top fives, giving him 146 top fives out of 206 events. Jimmy also garnered six track championships and 2 Classics during his prolific seventies. Jimmy’s innovative race car designs revolutionized the supermodified class on several occasions during this period. His stellar racing career spanned twenty years and produced 87 wins, ranking him FIRST in all time feature wins. He won seven Track Championships total and three Classics, the last one in 1980 when he lead all 200 laps. Jimmy’s career was cut short by his tragic death in a racing accident at Oswego in 1982 on Classic weekend competing in the Modified 200.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame  Syracuse, NY – Co-Owner and chief mechanic of the famous Swift driven 10pins, Wright was credited with preparing a car that always had the potential of winning. He helped usher in the supermodified era when he built a controversial tubular framed modified in ’61, which was initially banned, but in future seasons led Swift to numerous wins and Championships when run as a supermodified without the body. Wright went on to design other winning cars and introduced such innovations as torsion suspension and kill switches to race cars.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame  Tewksbury, MA – Owner of the famous Flyin-5 car, Bowley made the six-hour journey to race at Oswego for nearly thirty years. Losing driver Red Sequin to a fatal crash in ’61 at Oswego, Bowley never gave up his quest for a Track Championship and Classic win, which finally came in ’84 with fellow New Englander Bentley Warren at the wheel. The potent Bowley-Bentley combination went on to win several more Championships and Classics in the mid-to-late eighties.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Hastings, MI – One of the early pioneers of supermodified racing at Oswego in the early sixties, Gordie thrilled the crowd with his driving skills aboard the Mace Thomas red No. 85 super. Gordie went onto a successful USAC Champ car career starting in 1964, which ultimately led to two Indy 500 victories in ’73 and ’82.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Rochester, NY – Pilot of the Dick Mangus red No. 5, Lee was one of the top contenders during the stock car days of the late fifties, and first to top the 90 mph mark on the smaller Oswego oval. His 16 feature wins, including the ’59 International Classic, puts him among the top 25 all-time Oswego winners.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Burlington, Ontario – The first Canadian driver to be inducted into the Oswego Hall of Fame won 19 features for ten different supermodified car owners in his career, which spanned twenty years. The highlights of Coniam’s racing career were his Track Championship in ’78 with the Dave McKnight car and his two International Classic wins, in ’77 with the same McKnight car 6 and in ’87 with the Joe Magari No. 10.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Richwood, Ohio – Pilot of the Fintstone Flyer No. 0, Gibson made a name for himself at Oswego in the mid-to-late sixties when he introduced the roadster concept supermodified to competition. Gibson’s break-out season was in 1968 when he won an incredible 13 of 17 features (including 9 straight) on his way to the Track Championship. Todd’s total of 21 feature wins ranks him among Oswego’s elite.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Oswego, NY – Car owner of the red No. 9 from 1962 until his death in 1997, Steve campaigned a supermodified for a number of different drivers, but none more successful than his own son Steve, Jr. who began driving the car in 1973. Together the father-son team won the ’76 International Classic, ’85 Track Championship and 26 feature events.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Fulton, NY – The likeable easy going Willie was one of the most important track officials in the early years of the Speedway. His tall stature made him a natural for his job as Starter for the first ten years of the track’s existence. He then became the speedway’s first Track Manager and wrote the first set of rules and race procedures. He was also instrumental in guiding the growth of the supermodified division in its infancy.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Buffalo, NY – The likeable young man from Western New York exploded onto the Oswego supermodified racing scene in 1965 when he drove Howard Purdy’s “Little Deuce” upright to 12 feature wins, (including five consecutive), on his way to the ’65 Track Championship. The following year Lux was killed in a sprint car accident in Tulsa, OK while rekindling a USAC career, which he had hoped would lead him to Indianapolis.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Syracuse, NY – “The Flyin Dutchman” was one of the top drivers of the fifties stock car days. Blum is one of only several drivers that won races on the original track when it was dirt, the original track when it was asphalt and the newly enlarged paved track in ’61. Billy won the very first race ever held at Oswego: heat race No. 1 on Aug. 10, 1951 and also won the first feature on the new 5/8 mile track on May 30, 1961. But the highlight of his career was winning the ’58 International Classic in the Nick Virgo 23.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Burdett, NY – “Charlin Charlie” earned his driving stripes on the rough and tumble Central New York dirt tracks before turning his attentions to the Oswego supermodifieds in the mid-to-late seventies. An Oswego career which lasted about ten years netted 16 feature wins, abd puts him among the top 25 all time drivers. His most successful ride came aboard the Ron Buckner orange No. 36 which carried him to two back-to-back International Classic wins in 1978 and 1979.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Toronto, Ontario – “Stormin Norman” was the first Canadian to compete weekly at Oswego in the supermodified division. Piloting his own “New Toronto Rocket” No. 40 in the inaugural ’62 supermodified racing season at Oswego, Norm went on to become one of Oswego’s best and most popular competitors in his near twenty year career. His most successful years were in the ’69 to ’71 era when he teamed with fellow Canadian car owner Norm Hagen to drive the former Gibson roadster to many wins and a 2nd in the ’69 Classic.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Syracuse, NY – The “father side” of Oswego’s most successful Father/Son Racing Team. With his young son Doug at the wheel the Heveron Team completely dominated the ’81 and ’82 racing seasons, with 13 feature wins the first year and 11 wins in the second, along with both International Classics and Track Championships. In ’83 Heveron was credited with resurrecting Bentley Warren’s supermodified career, helping him win his first Oswego Track Championship. Tom also helped form the International SuperModified Association and served as its president during the startup years from ’74 through ’79.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Oswego, NY – For more than forty years the Track Superintendant and track owner Harry Caruso’s “right hand man.” There since the inception of the speedway, Charlie helped build the speedway, by hand and then went it came time to run the show, Charlie stepped up to head the fire and rescue squad, a position he held for more than forty years. Besides that, at the beginning of the evening he sold everyone entering the speedway their pit pass! Charlie was one of the most respected officials by fellow employees and competitors alike.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Rome, NY – Probably the greatest modified driver in history, Richie made Oswego a frequent stop on his busy schedule. From 1969 until his untimely death in the fall of 1985, Richie visited victory lane at Oswego 13 times including two Bud 200 victories. While his Oswego record was stellar, his racing career across the Northeast was legendary with over 400 feature wins from Maine to Florida, numerous NASCAR point titles and Hall of Fame status in many venues.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Burlington, Ontario – The first Canadian supermodified competitor to win an Oswego Track Championship (1969) and an International Classic (1973). Kenny, mild mannered off the track but very aggressive on the track was a great mechanic and innovator as well as a driver, which earned him 20 feature wins and 75 top five finishes in an Oswego career which only spanned eight years.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Battle Creek, MI – Art, driving the Carl Behnke Trucking No. 141, was one of the first legitimate supermodified car drivers to ever compete at Oswego. His first visit here in ‘61 led him to his only International Classic win. The following season Art towed in weekly from Michigan to win the ’62 Oswego Track Championship. During the next five years of competition Art amassed an impressive record of 13 feature wins and 43 top five finishes to now rank as one of Oswego’s all time top drivers.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Fulton, NY – One of a handful of drivers to experience racing competition in both the “A” and “B” divisions of the fifties and the supermodified cars of the sixties and beyond, Ronnie’s career is one of the longest on record, spanning nearly thirty years. One of the more distinguished of Oswego “lunch-pail drivers” Ronnie found rides wherever he could. Some led him to top place finishes, others led him nowhere. Wallace raced for twenty years until he finally found feature victory lane in 1975, aboard the Dick Rayner / Roscoe Towne No. 76 and parlayed that win to garner the ’75 Oswego Track Championship. Ronnie’s lengthy career places him among the top 25 in the All-Time Supermodified Point Standings.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Rochester, NY – Ronnie competed as a driver in the early seventies, but soon found his talents were best expressed as a car designer/builder, owner and chief mechanic. Success with driver Bobby Stelter in the early to mid-seventies led to even greater success later in the seventies when Ron hired driver Chuck Ciprich. Together they combined for 16 feature wins in the late seventies / early eighties with several different Buckner orange No. 36 creations. The highlight of Ron’s career was orchestrating back-to-back International Classics wins in ’78 and ’79.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Baldwinsville, NY – For 35 years the “Golden Voice of Oswego Speedway.” His distinctive voice made Jack one of the most recognizable people in all of motorsports and the standard by which other announcers were judged. Most of Central New York announcers began their careers as understudies of Burgess. Jack was also credited with giving many of the drivers their nicknames which went on to stick with them for the rest of their driving careers.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Rochester, NY – One of the top competitors in the new era of modified competition at Oswego beginning in 1969, Troyer’s immaculately prepared red No. 6 cars were always at or near the head of the pack. In his Oswego modified career, which ran through 1982, Maynard won eight times, including back-to-back Bud Mod 200’s in ’75 and ’76. He also finished in the top five 19 times. Troyer’s racing career took him all around the East Coast, where he achieved success equal to that at Oswego and help him launch his car building business, Troyer Engineering, which provided race winning cars for competition on asphalt as well as dirt tracks all around the Eastern United States.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Oswego, NY – The driver who grew up closest to the race track and watched his father campaign a supermodified went on to become one of the best drivers Oswego Speedway ever produced. Steve Jr.’s long and successful 25 year supermodified career was one of consistency producing 26 feature wins and enough top place finishes to rank him among the elite drivers in all points categories. The highlights of his racing career were his ’76 International Clasic win and ’85 Track Championship. Soon after retiring from racing, Steve, Jr. put together a deal to buy the track he became legend at and now is a part owner of Oswego Speedway.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Red Creek, NY – Kempton’s first victory at Oswego came in a snowmobile in 1970. After steady improvement, by the mid-seventies Kemp became not only a top driver but a premier car builder. Dates’ break-out season as a driver came in 1977 when he won seven features on his way to the Track Championship. Dates was a gallon of fuel short of winning the ’77 Classic, but a car he built went onto victory. Kemp’s final numbers as a driver of 11 wins and 54 top fives rank him in the top twenty of all time supermodified drivers.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Mexico, NY – The easy going gas station owner was one of Oswego’s early racing pioneers. He was at the very first race in 1951 and found victory lane on the Oswego dirt in ’52 and again in August after the track was paved. But Jerrett was known more for his consistency than he was for his victories. In six years of competition from ’52 through ’57 Jerrett never finished lower than third in the points. He won the ’55 Track Championship without ever winning a feature. Jerrett registered 10 feature wins in his 10 year career at Oswego and 70 top five finishes. Jerrett came out of retirement to drive his son’s supermodified in the ’63 Classic and finished in 9th place the first time in a super.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Buffalo, NY – Owner and builder of the “Little Deuce” supermodified. Purdy campaigned the car with Ronnie Lux in 1965, which led to 12 feature wins and the ’65 Track Championship. Purdy hired Bentley Warren to drive the car in ’66 and in the next four seasons that produced another five wins including the ’69 International Classic. Other stellar drivers to sit in the cockpit of the Purdy deuce included Jimmy Winks and Warren Coniam who also had wins in this car. In eleven years of competition, Purdy and the Little Deuce won 25 features in all. Purdy still has this immortal little super tucked away in a garage.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Oswego, NY – Marty was one of the original cornermen at the Speedway, but during the week, a regular employee of the Northern Steel / Oswego Speedway corporations, worked at the speedway building grandstands and guardrails. Marty entered into racing competition himself in the mid-fifties and drove for several years before hiring local drivers. Crucitti made the conversion to supermodified competition and enjoyed several successful seasons. After retiring from competition Marty returned to his cornerman duties part time, while helping one of his sons campaign a supermodified car.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Nashville, MI – Nicknamed, the “Little Tiger,” Sammy was one of the many Michigan drivers that dominated the early supermodified days at Oswego. The fan popular Sessions drove Pete Webster’s Bingo 151 super to three feature wins in a row early in 1964 before taking the car out of the ball-park in turn one in a spectacular crash. The following season Sessions began a USAC racing career that saw him successfully compete in Champ, Sprint and Midget divisions, the highlight being a top five finish in the ’72 Indy 500. Sammy came back to Oswego in 1968 and won a USAC Sprint car race.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Fulton, NY – Second generation race driver to have a Hall of Fame race career at Oswego, just like his dad, Ed Sr. Junior’s career began in ’72 and over the next nearly thirty years compiled one of the best driving records of all time. His 52 feature wins ranks him behind only legends Shampine, Swift and Warren. The high water marks of Eddie’s career are his Track Championship in 1988 and FIVE International Classic victories. In ’93 he became the first driver to win the Classic after making a pit stop. But Eddie will go down in history being remembered for his exciting ’83 Classic win on the last lap.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Central Square, NY – Freddie was in college when he built his first super in 1968. His engineering degree helped him build some innovative equipment including a rear-engine Indy car for super competition in ’73. But it was his teaming with Alabama builder Bill Hite to drive a rear-engine four-wheel drive car that brought Fred most of his notoriety. During the ’75 and ’76 seasons, before the car was outlawed, Graves dominated the competition and won six features. When Graves’ driving career ended in the early ‘80s, he began building supermodified cars and by the late ‘80s his cars were the most popular and prevalent among the competition. Fred then left the area to pursue a successful mechanical career in NASCAR Nextel Cup.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Syracuse, NY – Dutt was one of the original racing pioneers, competing at Oswego in ’51 when it was dirt, But Dutt’s claim to fame is that he was the undisputed king of the “Class B” flat-head engine division of the fifties. In the first season of B-competition, Yanni won 10 out of 16 features to win the ’57 Class B Track Championship. He also won the ’60 “B” track title. Yanni would also run his flat-head against the more powerful overhead cars in the “A” division and competed in the inaugural ’57 Classic, finishing 16th. Yanni was also a fixture at the NYS Fair Labor Day Championship, which he won in ’54.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Sandy Creek, NY – After purchasing a pit-pass to an event in 1965, noticing that the pit stewards were short-handed that evening, Norm pitched in to help. That eventually led him to show up weekly and help out without being paid. Maybe there was a method to his actions because soon after Norm applied for a position of employment at Harry Caruso’s Steel plant. Harry recognized the self-motivated hulk-of-a-man and soon Bacon was involved in many of the construction projects that were on-going at the speedway. When the starters’ position became available after Clyde Rowlee retired after the ’68 season, Norm was elected to fill the position. For the next 15 years Norm worked at the speedway by day and was perched in the starter’s stand every Saturday night, where his imposing stature and friendly demeanor made him one of the favorite officials among the competition.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Syracuse, NY – In the late sixties longtime motorhead friends John and Jim bought Kenny Bartholomew’s “woodshed” super and formed the Solvay Automotive 04 race team. With driver Bobby Stelter at the wheel they won their first feature in ’69 and began a long supermodified racing career. For more than twenty years Pallotta and DeLucia fielded their immaculate maroon 04 super for a host of drivers including more notable chauffeurs like Warren Coniam, Jim Cheney and Larry Record at Oswego and on the ISMA circuit with much success.

For more than twenty years Pallotta and DeLucia fielded their immaculate maroon 04 super for a host of drivers including more notable chauffeurs like Warren Coniam, Jim Cheney and Larry Record at Oswego and on the ISMA circuit with much success.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Chemung, NY – One of Oswego’s top competitors in the new era of modified competition, post 1969. In the early days of his career young Bodine was known for competing fiercely aboard the T.K. McLean Valiant bodied blue No. 99. Throughout the seventies and early eighties Bodine’s racing star continued to rise - not only at Oswego, (where he won 9 times including the ’79 and ’81 Bud 200’s), but all over the Eastern United States. In 1978 Bodine landed in the Guiness Book of World Records by winning 55 out of 74 main events aboard the Dick Armstrong No. 1. In 1982 Bodine joined the NASCAR Winston Cup ranks and slowly paved the way for Yankee competitors to successfully compete at this high level. The highlight of Bodine’s long NASCAR career was when he won the Daytona 500 in 1986.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Canton, OH – The energetic Allbritain first appeared at Oswego in an upright sprinter in the early seventies and from the first time he entered the speedway he looked to be something special. Early indications did not prove wrong. With a competitive ride in the Dick Routh No. 75 Gary won his first Oswego feature and the ’75 International Classic. His career at Oswego is one of a few than spanned four decades, although not full time. In that time span he drove for a number of different car owners and became affectionately known as “Mr. September.” When Classic time came around car owners without a good driver looked to Gary to fill the bill and he did so successfully. His Classic record is an impressive one with 1 win, five top five finishes and top ten ranking in all time Classic points. Near the end of his career Allbritain visited victory lane one more time at Oswego with an impressive ISMA win on Classic weekend of ’99.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Baldwinsville, NY – Son of early supermodified driver Jimmy Muldoon, Mike got into the sport in 1983 when he purchased Eddie Bellinger Jr.’s 02 super right after the ’82 Classic. A steady progression lead him to a ride in Joe Magari’s car in ’88 in which he won the Mr. Supermodified title event, which also happened to be his first feature win. Mike’s breakout season came in 1995 when he unveiled a new super, which proved to be of winning caliber. Mike won the ’95 International Classic and three Track Championship in a row: ’97,’98 and ’99. Mike built and fielded several other cars during this time frame, one of which carried Davey Hamilton to the ’97 Classic win. Mike’s stellar career was cut short when he sustained hand injuries in a crash on opening day of the 2000 season. Muldoon amassed a total of 21 features wins and 105 top five finishes in his seventeen-year career, which ranks him among the top 20 all time drivers.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Tolland, CT – For twenty years this New England car owner made the long trip to Oswego to seek success. But that success eluded the clever tool-and-die maker. Designer supers purchased from such notable builders as Rollie Lindblad and Maynard Troyer - and driven by some of the top chauffeurs of the day - provided some moments of brilliance, but too quickly ended in frustration. With twenty years in the books chasing his dream, Skip was ready to give up at the end of the ’93 season. A call by one of his former driviers, Doug Didero, convinced him to give it one more try. Two new cars were built in North Carolina by Didero and Matczak, along with the help of former car builder Fred Graves. In the next three seasons of competition the Matczak/Didero team completely dominated the Oswego Speedway, winning two dozen features on his way to three consecutive Track Championships in ’95, ’95 and ’96 along with the ’96 International Classics. After 20 years of trying Matczak finally found the success he was seeking, becoming one of Oswego’s all-time winning car owners.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Oswego, NY – For over 45 years he was one of the first people you saw when you entered the front gate of Oswego Speedway. Matter of fact, you probably heard him before you saw him. He was “Pete, the Program Seller.” But, Pete was much more than that. His warm and friendly demeanor made people welcome to the Speedway - and often with the greeting: “Whattya say, Si!” Pete and his wife Lorraine became founding members of the Oswego Eagles Fan Club and Pete served as its president for nine years.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Fulton, NY – For 40 years this man led more races than any other driver in the history of Oswego Speedway. Of course we’re talking about pace car driver Floyd Wallace. Floyd picked up the job in the mid-fifties when Tiffany Motors Chevrolet of Oswego used to provide a different car every week to pace the field. When the track was enlarged and the racing division changed to supermodifieds, the use of the pace car changed from that of just a showpiece to a functioning part of the race. After every caution flag, Floyd was expected to enter the track immediately following the safety vehicles and gather up the field and maintain a reasonable speed so that rescue work could be done in a secure setting. Floyd did it with perfection for his entire 40-year career without as much as one incident.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Rochester, NY – There has been no one more deserving of the Special Achievement Hall of Fame designation than these three men. After the supermodifieds had been firmly entrenched as the prime division of competition at Oswego for more than a dozen years, noted modified car owners Ray and Don Turner turned up at the Oswego gates in ’73 with their driver Gary Reichert, took the body off their modified car and competed effectively against the lighter and more powerful supermodifieds. In fact their performance was nothing short of remarkable. In ’73 they had five top fives and finished 11th in the points to earn Reichert the Rookie of the Year honors. Their crowning achievement occurred on May 5, 1974 during the Port City 150 when Reichert won the modified feature over Evans, Troyer and Bodine, then took the body off the car and finished 4th in the supermodified feature behind more Hall of Famers Shampine and Dates.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Strasburg, OH – One of the most colorful and popular drivers to compete on a regular basis from the state of Ohio was Baldy Baker. Baldy made his initial appearances at Oswego during a mid-sixties Classic when competitors came from Ohio, Indiana and Michigan by the dozens for this event. But Baldy was one of the few that decided to make the trek to Oswego on a weekly basis beginning in the early seventies. His greatest success at Oswego came aboard the Gary Myles/Keith Barker No. 93. His other potent ride was the Norm Hagen No. 6. Baldy amassed seven feature wins and 29 top five finishes, but more importantly a host of local fans, especially Budwesier drinking ones, that remembered him long after he retired as a driver.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Toronto, ONT – The eccentric master craftsman from Canada, designed and built the first winning rear engine supermodified at Oswego. That fete was accomplished on June 20, 1970 with driver Johnny Spencer. Duncan went on to build more innovative supermodified creations in his twenty year career as a car owner. Duncan’s cars were always capable of winning and attracted the current cream of the crop helmet carriers to drive them. Many that did are also Oswego Hall of Famers. Duncan’s crowning achievement occurred after his death when he was inducted posthumously into the Canadian National Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 1999.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Fulton, NY – For twenty five years Ted had the unenviable job of Chief Technical Inspector for the supermodified division. What once started out as a single sheet of paper in the early sixties had evolved into a fifty-page rule book by the eighties and it was Teddy’s job to see that the rules were obeyed by everyone and a level playing field was maintained. Teddy did it with a calm yet business-like demeanor that short-circuited many potential volatile situations between competitors and track management. Powers was also instrumental in bringing about many cost saving changes in the supermodified division and then helped formulate the rules for the new limited supermodified division in the early nineties.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Boise, ID – Davey honed his driving skills on the Western Supermodified Racing circuit. When he repeatedly beat all of the invading top Eastern Supermodified teams at the Copper Classic in Phoenix, AZ, car owner Paul Dunigan offered Davey a ride in the ’92 Oswego Classic. Hamilton was an instant hit at Oswego, not only on the track but with the fans as well. And for the next nine years Davey added character and distinction to the Oswego Classic with his participation, while cultivating his IRL racing career and competing regularly at this high level including the Indy 500 event. In 1997 Hamilton, under contract with driving legend AJ Foyt, needed and received his blessing to compete in the International Classic that year, which he won.

Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame Oswego, NY – Son of one of the speedway founders, George Sr., “Junior” literally grew up at the speedway. There is virtually no job he hasn’t done at the speedway at one time or another, from picking up garbage after school, all the way up to owning the track for ten years, between 1992 and 2002, with his younger brothers Doug and Romey. George Jr. and his brother Doug formed Speedway Press in 1964 and originated the EAGLE Program, which has been the written voice of Oswego Speedway for over forty years. George has also written two full length books on Oswego Speedway: The fifty year history of the track in 2000 and the fifty year history of the International Classic in 2007.

  Oswego, NY - Romey and Doug Caruso join brother George and complete the second generation of Caruso’s in the Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame. The 1951 founding family of the Oswego Speedway, Harry, Bill and George Caruso were original members of the Hall of Fame when it was established. Romey and Doug had been around the Oswego Speedway for most of their young and adult lives. Away from the track, Romey had his own Accounting Business and Doug worked with George Jr. with the day- to- day operations of Speedway Press. But there was very little time “away from the track” if you were a second generation Caruso. The “second phase” of Oswego Speedway track history would take shape in 1992. With failing health to Harry Caruso, Romey was instilled as Track Promoter and Doug was appointed as Race Director. They brought to life their new creation, the “Limited Supermodifieds”, and as they say, the rest is history. The foresight of adding a second class of cars is probably the single most important decision any Caruso ever made to ensure the weekly survival of this race track which has flourished for fifty seven summers. They are just race fans now that they sold the family track in 2004. The Limited Supermodifieds have been renamed the SBS Racing Series and starting in 2007 they competed for the SBS Cup in their 100 Lap Classic race on Labor Day Weekend. That trophy is inscribed with a dedication to Romey, Doug and George Caruso, Jr. who now sit in the Hall of Fame with their father and uncles where they belong.

  Oswego, NY – Little did anyone know that when a young kid started to broadcast Oswego Speedway races over the airwaves of WOSC Radio in the mid 1960’s that it would lead to a permanent announcing job for the next forty three years as the “Voice of the Oswego Speedway”. As an Oswego native, Roy Sova’s adult life has taken him down many paths throughout the eastern part of the United States. None-the-less, each and every race day at the Oswego Speedway, except for a few, has found Roy behind a microphone at the track. He has worked along side legendary dirt track announcers Jack Burgess and Joe Marotta and with infield announcers Rich Goldstein and Norris MacDonald. With a great supporting cast over four decades it is the sound of Roy’s voice that most fans connect Oswego Speedway memories with. It is with a professional range and passion that Roy was able to call the most famous lap in Oswego Speedway history on the last lap of the 1983 Classic for Eddie Bellinger’s first Classic win and switch gears to make a heartfelt speech just one year earlier before the start of the 1982 Classic just sixteen hours after the death of Oswego Speedway legend Jim Shampine. Two generations of fans that have walked through the turnstiles at the Oswego Speedway walk back out every race day with the sound of Roy Sova’s voice calling the supermodified race action as part of their Oswego Speedway memory.

  Oswego, NY – Don Kranz has probably taken any picture that you can remember from anytime in the last fifty one seasons at the Oswego Speedway. Don was on hand for the first International Classic in 1957 and hasn’t missed a season since then. He has always had quality help with different areas of the track over the years but he has been fortunate enough to capture most of the great action shots for over five decades. As a staff photographer for the Palladium Times in the sixties and seventies, most of his pictures were on the Monday night sports pages for two decades of Oswego Speedway racing seasons. As a tribute to his long standing career as a photographer at the Speedway, Speedway Press featured some of Don’s most memorable photos each week in a special ad in the weekly Eagle program during 2007. Don can remember the days of having to go home to develop a picture and bring it back to the track to decide a photo finish for the evening’s feature race. With today’s technology, Don and his staff can shoot Victory Lane shots and print them out with race night-specific borders and have them available for teams in a matter of minutes. Every issue of the Oswego Eagle that has been printed over the past forty four seasons has had photos in it from Don Kranz and that was seven years after he started shooting his first pictures at the Oswego Speedway.

  Oswego, NY – Ed Shea has been a man behind the machine for decades in the supermodified racing world. He has partnered up with other businessmen and ventured into different types of racing over the years but supermodified car ownership is what he is best associated with. He set his sight on the Oswego Speedway with driver Russ Wood in the early nineties and was a threat to win each night out. As the team was enjoying regional success on the ISMA tour they were consistent runners weekly at the Oswego Speedway. ISMA Points Championships came to the team in 1991 and 1994. 1993 Ed Shea was named the Oswego Speedway “Car Owner of the Year”. 1994 was his best year as an owner with Russ Wood picking up his second ISMA Points title for Shea and finishing in second in the Oswego Speedway Points chase by just 37 points. The wins piled up over the years everywhere Ed Shea cars raced. Ed Shea was a big part of racing at the Oswego Speedway in the decade of the 1990’s and still supports supermodified racing today.

  Oswego, NY – The mastermind behind one of the most successful runs ever at the Oswego Speedway was car builder Ed LaPrade. With a high school kid named Doug Heveron at the controls, the #1 team was unstoppable from the late seventies through the early eighties at the Oswego Speedway and on the ISMA tour. The remarkable run of International Classic dominance began in 1979 and lasted through 1983. The Ed LaPrade built #1 ran 1,000 Classic laps during those five years without skipping a beat. The car never finished out of the top four and picked up wins in 1981 and 1982. The season-long dominance was reflected with three Track Championship Titles. In 1981 and 1982 Doug Heveron won the Track Crown and in 1983 Bentley Warren picked up the title with a brand new team car #01. Bentley Warren would continue to dominate with an Ed LaPrade built car after the Heveron team sold one to Ed Bowley. Warren picked up Track Titles in 1984, 1986 and 1987 and Classic wins in 1984 and 1986. From 1979 through 1987 an Ed LaPrade Chassis won four International Classics, 5 ISMA Points Titles and six Oswego Speedway track Championships. In 2006, Team Heveron “came out of retirement” and built a new car and restored an original Ed LaPrade Chassis. That restored car finished in third in the 2006 International Classic.

  Oswego, NY – Competing at the Oswego Speedway in parts of five decades has put Bentley Warren at or near the top of all statistical categories. From his first feature win on September 17, 1966 to his most recent feature win exactly forty years later on September 17, 2006, there is little that Bentley hasn’t accomplished at the Oswego Speedway. He is third on the all-time feature win list with 66 victories. He is tied with Nolan Swift and Greg Furlong with six International Classic wins. He is tied with Jimmy Shampine with seven Track Championships. He has won Classics or Track Championships for Oswego Speedway Hall of Fame car owners, Howard Purdy, Ed Bowley and Tom Heveron. He won the first ever ISMA Super Nationals at the Oswego Speedway in 1994 and repeated that win in 2006. He is a threat even today to win with or without a wing and his accolades will continue as long as he continues to race.
