| The long awaited debut of the new Kids on-Track "Mini-Supermodifieds" will be Saturday June 17th at the Oswego Speedway before the regular night of racing begins. Four elementary aged school children in the Oswego School district will be the first drivers of these unique cars that were created from scratch by students who attend Oswego County BOCES.
Dave Marsden’s Metal Fabrication Class did the bulk of the design and construction of the cars. The Body and Paint Class put the finishing touches on the cars before they were sent off to be lettered up with the final graphics for each car. Dave Marsden has been looking for a program like this for a couple of years and everything came together at BOCES to have the cars built for the 2006 racing season at the Oswego Speedway. Local business sponsorships made it possible for five cars to be created by BOCES. The five replica "Mini-Supermodified" cars include the Raby’s Ace Homecenter #0 of Tim Snyder; the Price Chopper #61 of Mike Ordway; the Your House, Your Home #72 of Greg Furlong; the Carvels/Victory Lane Karts 1979 Jim Shampine rear engine 8ball and the Staples original "Hawk Chassis" #2. The Staples #2 will be on display at the Oswego store for the entire 2006 racing season. The other four cars will make appearances at their sponsor locations during the season as well. On June 17th the cars will be driven by Oswego school students that are members of the Kids On-Track program. On June 24th the rides have been awarded as prizes to school children at Palmer Elementary School in Baldwinsville. The cars will compete on and off through August 26th at the Oswego Speedway and all cars will be on location at Staples during around Classic time so Kids On-Track members and parents who are busy getting back-to-school supplies can see each of them up close. Without the help of the five sponsors and the creation and production of the cars by students in different classes at Oswego County BOCES, this program would never have made it to the track. Maybe some of the Kids On-Track members who get to ride in these cars this summer will grow up someday to help build more "Mini-Supermodifieds" when they are old enough to attend BOCES themselves. |
