Two week break in the action allows the paved racing surface to be repaired at Oswego.

With the big Independence Weekend race as the next item on the 2009 racing schedule at the Oswego Speedway, these last two weeks of June are a perfect time to do some maintenance to the racing surface. During this rare scheduled two week break in the season, several concrete patches are being removed and replaced by J & S Paving Company.

The break in the season at Oswego allows the NORA Small Block Supers to be in action at Spencer Speedway on June 19th and the MSA/Oswego Winged Supers at Lorain County Speedway in Ohio on June 20th. Supers and Small Block Supers also have June 27th off as there traditionally is no racing on graduation weekend.

The Oswego Speedway opened as a dirt track in August of 1951, but by opening day 1952 it was paved. It was resurfaced in 1956 then expanded from 3/8’s of a mile to its current configuration of 5/8’s of a mile before the start of the 1961 season. The track was targeted to be expanded one last time in the 1960’s and have the first and second turns match those of the old horse racing track which sat on the site. However, land could not be purchased on the west end of the speedway and re-shaping the track for the third time did not happen. The final complete re-paving of the surface occurred during the 1970 racing season but no weeks were lost because of it.

J & S Paving completed repair work to the Oswego Speedway paved parking lot just before the start of the 2009 season. Now they take their paving work right to the racing surface just in time for two big back-to-back racing weekends at Oswego. July 4th will be the Jim Shampine Memorial 58 and the Tony White Memorial 34 and July 11th will be the first ever $10,000 to win “King of Wings” MSA sanctioned race where over three dozen drivers should be on hand to try and claim the largest first place check in winged supermodified history.
