The 2008 Oswego Speedway racing schedule has been finalized. Full color brochures and posters were first distributed at the Gater News Motorsports Expo at the New York State Fairgrounds, March 7th, 8th & 9th. At least four classes of cars are set to make their first ever appearance for a regular Saturday show at Oswego. The highly successful MSA-Oswego Wing Series doubles from three to six scheduled races in 2008. In all, the schedule will showcase ten classes of race cars and have five $10 adult admission nights during the 2008 season.
The racing calendar opens up again with the fan inspired Spring Spruce-Up Day on Saturday April 12th. The event is again sponsored by Oswego Pizza Villa which will be providing free lunch to the all volunteer clean up workers. Saturday April 26th marks the third time that the March of Dimes “March for Babies” walk-a-thon will be held at the Oswego Speedway. This has proven to be a popular site for the event as participants in the walk tour the track for their pledge dollars and kids can play in the infield within eye sight of their parents.
The racing takes center stage for the season on Sunday afternoon May 4th as Gater News sponsors the 58th annual opening day. The Burkes Do-It Best MSA-Oswego Wing Series and the PathFinder Bank Small Block Supers, or SBS, Series will be on the schedule that afternoon. Racing continues in the month of May with the first Saturday night race on May 10th. Lighthouse Lanes and Oswego Sub Shop sponsor the Oswego Minor Hockey League night at the speedway. The Novelis Supermodifieds join the SBS Series on the schedule for the first of five $10 adult admission nights on the schedule for 2008. Community Bank, Burritt Motors and Parts Plus are the sponsors on Memorial Day Weekend with the traditional feature races named in honor of Jim Shampine, Tony White and Richie Evans. This is the first of three Novelis “Get your can to the Speedway” nights in 2008 where fans can turn in recyclable aluminum cans and earn Classic Week race tickets. The month of May comes to a close on the 31st with Garafolo’s and Millwrights local #1163 night. This is another $10 adult admission night with the supermodifieds, SBS series and SST Modifieds in action.
The first weekend in June offers a double-header for the Burkes Do-It Best MSA-Oswego Wing Series as they are on the road at Spencer Speedway on Friday night June 6th and at the Oswego Speedway on June 7th along with the SBS series for the Caruso Tax & Accounting and Chris Nelson Insurance night of racing. Sunday afternoon June 8th is held open as a rain date for the MSA-Oswego Series. Oswego Speedway is quiet on Saturday June 14th but the next event in the Burkes Do-It Best MSA-Oswego Wing Series takes place at Sandusky Speedway on that night. Wednesday night June 18th brings the D.I.R.T Modifieds to the Oswego Speedway for the first of two visits in 2008. The next two June weekend’s offer some new classes of cars to test the asphalt at the Oswego Speedway. On Friday June 20th, the Tobias Slingshots will race on the dirt track oval behind the back grandstands. On Saturday the 21st, Dunkin Donuts and Constellation & Entergy are the sponsors as the Tobias Slingshots and Tobias SpeedSTR’s will be in action along with the supermodifieds and the SBS series and the annual Demolition Derby. This is the first of two Constellation and Entergy “Kids Autograph Sessions” and the second can collection night. June winds down on the 28th with the Gater News Empire Super Sprints and NORA Small Block Super show. This is another $10 adult admission night at the speedway.
July kicks off in a big way on July 5th with the Ferris Industries and Maple View Garage night. The “real” racing that night will be by the supermodifieds, SBS series and the Atlantic Coast Old Timers Club. The “interesting” racing that night will be the Outdoor Power “Firecracker 4” Announcer’s Match Race II. This year “Joltin Joe” Marotta will take on the winner between “Reckless Roy” Sova and “Dangerous Dan” Johnson. This will be an all out battle to take the bragging rights away from the 2007 winner, Sova. The night will end with a fireworks display. The WSEN Mid-Summer Super Cruise and Party in the Pits is on Friday July 11th. Again for 2008 there will be Syracuse Nationals trophies awarded in five categories and Millennium Music will be the entertainment. The following night, the Tobacco Free Network and WSEN 92.1 FM will be sponsoring the night of racing with the supermodifieds and the SBS series. The 3rd annual Old Timers Reunion will be on this date and this is another $10 adult admission night. July comes to a close at Oswego on the 19th as Oswego Bagelry & Sandwich Shop and Econo Lodge & Best Western sponsor the night of racing. The supermodifieds and SBS series will be joined by the second appearance of the Parts Plus RoC Modified Series. Oswego is quiet on July 26th as the supermodified teams converge on Sandusky Speedway for the Hy-Miler Classic.
The big month of August kicks off on the 2nd when Fleet Pride presents the “Mr. Novelis Supermodified” and “Mr. PathFinder Bank SBS” races. This proves to always be an exciting night for the fans with $10,000 and $1,500 on the line, respectfully, for the race winners. This is the final “Kids Autograph Session” and can collection night for the season. Friday night August 8th is the “Farnham Family Fun Night”. This will be a family-themed carnival sponsored by Farnham Family Services. On August 9th, Longley Brothers Dodge and BFS Direct sponsor the fifth and final $10 adult admission night as the supermodifieds and SBS series are in action along with the Mid-State Old Timers Club. The 2008 regular season comes to a close on August 16th with the Oswego Quality Carpet and Hoosier Tire “Track Championship” night. For the first time ever the point titles are scheduled to end for the Novelis Supermodifieds and PathFinder Bank SBS Series with Twin Features in both divisions. There is no racing on August 23rd as teams prepare for Classic Week but that date will be the second visit to the speedway for the Sport Compact & Truck Blast.
Budweiser Classic Week kicks off on Tuesday August 26th with the Garafolo’s Lawn Mower Classic. On Wednesday the 27th, it is the Lighthouse Lanes “Racing Rolling Classic Bowling” event. On Thursday the 28th, it will be the WSEN Classic Super Cruise and Party in the Pits with some more Syracuse Nationals Trophies on the line. Racing takes to the speedway on Friday the 29th with the 15th Burkes Do-It Best Winged Super National 50 for MSA, ISMA and Oswego winged supers. The Tobias SpeedSTR's will are also on the schedule Friday night. On Saturday the 30th, the schedule is packed with the first round of the Davis Bros. Budweiser Classic Time Trials, the Parts Plus Modified 125, the Buckeye Super Sprints and the Maple View Garage SBS Bud Classic Time Trials. On August 31st it is “Budweiser 300” Classic Sunday. The schedule consists of the second round of Davis Bros. Budweiser Classic Time Trials, “Classic Consis” for both divisions, the 17th SBS Bud Classic 100 and the 52nd Budweiser International Classic 200.
The month of September on the racing schedule has the Oswego Speedway hosting the World Karting Association from September 12th through the 14th. The sixth and final race for the Burkes Do-It Best MSA-Oswego Wing Series is at Sandusky Speedway on September 13th. The 58th annual Modified Race of Champions will be at the Oswego Speedway from September 18th through the 20th. The final race of the 2008 schedule will be another Wednesday night D.I.R.T. Modified race on October 1st.
Weekly karting continues in 2008. On Thursday nights, karting is on the dirt track oval behind the back grandstands. On Sunday mornings, karting will be on the paved road course in the infield of the speedway.
So the 2008 schedule has almost every form of racing at the Oswego Speedway. Supermodifieds, Small Block Supers, Winged Supermodifieds, Pavement Modifieds, D.I.R.T. Modifieds, SST Modifieds, Paved Sprint Cars, Dirt Sprint Cars, Slingshots and SpeedSTR’s. That’s ten classes of race cars to go along with two Old Timers Clubs. In 2008, Oswego Speedway has it all.
