06MoDOff_200.jpgPerfect weather on Saturday morning April 29th greeted hundreds of walkers as the Oswego County version of the March of Dimes WalkAmerica made the Oswego Speedway its home for the first time in 2006. Also on tap was the first test session for the "Mini-Supermodifieds" for the Kids On-Track program.

Several WalkAmerica teams showed up with “Team Shirts” and some team members wore their new March of Dimes T-shirts which they received based on pledges received. Each team was able to select five or eight laps around the Speedway which is almost an exact kilometer in length at 5/8’s of a mile. Several sponsors of the March of Dimes provided drinks, food and fruit both before and after the event was over. The March of Dimes’ Syracuse Chapter, which put on the event, was happy with selecting the Oswego Speedway for the Oswego County WalkAmerica for 2006.

Another big event on the agenda was the first test session for the new Oswego County BOCES built “Mini-Supermodified” replicas that the Oswego Speedway purchased for the Kids On-Track program. Photos of the cars are loaded in the WalkAmerica Photo Gallery on the website. The test went well as plenty of things were learned about this brand new car created from scratch in Dave Marsden’s Metal Fabrication class. One of Dave’s students Dave Danzer, a Limited Super driver himself, was on hand for the entire test session helping get the bugs out of the new cars. Rides will be offered for kids in the higher elementary grades at the Speedway beginning on the Saturday June 3rd Family Admission and Kids Autograph Session night. There will be demonstrations with the cars by Danzer at the races leading up to that date to show the Kids On-Track members and their parents just what the cars look like in action on the specially designed course that is set up.

The March of Dimes WalkAmerica event and the Kids On-Track test session brought to and end the pre-seasson non-racing activities at the Speedway. Next up is a track rental session on Wednesday May 3rd for some Limited Supers and the Open Practice on Saturday May 6th for all classes of cars. Sunday May 7th is the Inaugural “Open Wheel Extravaganza” to start the 2006 racing season at the Oswego Speedway.
