Dave Gruel, Pete Brittain and Randy Ritskes made the Memorial Day Weekend racing at the Oswego Speedway an exciting evening with close victories in the Small Block Super, RoC Modified and Supermodified triple header on Burritt Motors and Community Bank night.
Auburn, New York driver Dave Gruel tried not to do what Auburn native Brian Sobus did last week and that was to lead most of the feature only to lose in the late going. Gruel gave up a seven second lead in the PathFinder Bank SBS Tony White Memorial 35 lap feature as the yellow flag waived with a handful of laps to go. Gruel was able to maintain his advantage over Mike Bond who finished in second. Bond has yet to finish worse than fourth in his new #26 so far in 2007. Josh LaRochelle had the patriotic body panels on the Outdoor Power #10 and came home in third place. Kevin Knopp continued his strong runs in his new #04 with a fourth place finish. Dave Cliff ran up front most of the night and rounded out the top five. The Cooks Jewelers Heat Race wins went to Ryan Coleman, Tim Barbeau and Rob Pullen. The Cutro Professional Inspections feature “Up ‘n Comer” was Alan Barker. The localtrax.com “Hard Charger” was Josh LaRochelle. The Butler Disposal “Hard Luck” driver was Shawn Walker. The SBS Racing News “Pass of the Race” was made by Mike Bond. The Whites Car Care “4th Place Bonus” went to Kevin Knopp.
The Novelis Supermodified feature ran just one lap when a major wreck occurred near the finish line as the #25 of Bob Bond and the #0 of Tim Snyder made contact in front of most of the field. With damage to so many cars it was decided to let all cars pit and run the RoC Modified portion of the program which saw a wire to wire win for Pete Brittain but the racing behind him between Matt Hirschman, Tony Hirscmann, Jan Leaty and Lee Sherwood kept the fans attention throughout the 100 lap Parts Plus Richie Evans Memorial 100. Podium finishes went to Brittain, Tony Hirschmann and Jan Leaty.
The Jim Shampine Memorial 50 for the Novelis Supermodifides resarted from lap one with thirteen cars able to make it back after repairs from the earlier wreck. Greg Furlong, Michael Barnes and Randy Ritskes were the cars to watch as the race unfolded. Ritskes slipped by Furlong on a restart uch the way he did two weeks ago on Opening Day. Ritskes then set his sights on Michael Barnes. Ritskes got by Barnes and the two, along with Furlong started a three car freight train to settle the feature. All of that changed on lap #21 when Furlong and Barnes made contact exiting turn number four. Furlong shot out to the wall and did a slow roll ending up on his roll cage. The Furlong car suffered major front end damage but Greg walked away from the wreck. The final twenty nine laps of the race saw Barnes give chase to Ritskes but he was unable to get by. Ritskes picked up the popular win for car owner Craig Rayvals. Barnes finished in second in just his second time out in the former Sitterly #79. Stephen Gioia III picked up his second top four finish of the young season with a fine third place finish. Tim Snyder came back from several pit stops to finish in fourth place. Craig Rayvals rounded out the top five with his new Hawk Chassis. The Burkes Home Center Heat Race wins went to Michael Barnes and Greg Furlong. (Barnes turned in a lap of 16.548 seconds in his heat win but second place runner Joe Gosek turned in a 16.353 second lap during the heat race.) The J&K Plumbing, Heating – A/C “Up ‘n Comer” was Stephen Gioia III. The Jakes Automotive “Hard Charger” was Randy Ritskes. The Colosse Cheese “Hard Luck” award went to Bob Bond. The 2 Xtreme Auto Transport “Pass of the Race” was turned in by Randy Ritskes. |
