The new Budweiser International Classic and SBS Classic Cups were unveiled at the recent 2006 Awards and Hall of Fame Banquet on October 28th. The Cups are already engraved with the names of the first fifty International Classic winners and the first fifteen SBS Classic winners. In commemorating the 2006 running of the 50th International Classic, the 15th SBS Classic and recognizing the 25th anniversary of Classic Week title sponsorship for Budweiser, it was decided to start a new tradition with these new cups. The winners each year of the International Classic and SBS Classic will receive a smaller version to take home while their name will be engraved on the Classic Cups that will be on permanent display year round at the Oswego Speedway. Each Cup was dedicated on October 28th to special individuals who played a great role in the foundation and durability of the International Classic and the SBS Classic races. Those dedications are as follows. 200 International Classic Cup This Cup is dedicated to the memory of Harry Caruso whose foresight led him and his brothers, George and Bill, to build the best short track for automobile racing in America back in 1951. Several of his ideas for function and fan comforts were ahead of their time. This Cup is also dedicated to the memory of Nolan Swift who was nicknamed “Mr. International Classic” and won six of the first sixteen Classic Races. Both men were pioneers in what we now enjoy as Supermodified racing at the Oswego Speedway. All drivers whose names are engraved on this cup have a significant role in the past, present and future of Supermodified racing. Dedicated October 28, 2006. SBS Classic Cup This Cup is dedicated to Romey, Doug and George Caruso, Jr. who saw the need in the early 1990’s to create a support division to keep weekly racing alive at the Oswego Speedway. Their creation would become a division that could compete as the main class of cars at most any small track in America. Several champion drivers have cut their teeth in this division and moved up to win championships in the Supermodified division. This one decision by Romey, Doug and George is likely the main reason that Oswego Speedway never ceased weekly racing action since its founding in 1951. All drivers whose names are engraved on this cup have a significant role in the past, present and future of the Small Block Super Racing Series. Dedicated October 28, 2006 |
