50th_classic_175.jpgClassic Weekend once again was one for the record books.  It was a weekend that will long be remembered as a different kind of weekend. Weather played a major role all weekend long, as the race was run on Monday for only the fourth time in its 50 year history. I’ll get into the on track action next week. This week, I would like to take the time to offer up my thanks to many people that helped through a difficult time.

I have written probably a thousand stories since I started covering Oswego Speedway on a weekly basis back in 1990.  This, undoubtedly, will be one of the toughest ones I will write as I don’t want to forget anyone.

I am a very lucky guy. I have two families that I care very deeply for.  I have my family with my wife Sandra and two boys Steve (17) and Greg (13). My mom and dad, 2 brothers and 2 sisters in Oswego.  I also have my race family I spend my Saturday nights with. It’s been said many times that racing is a family sport.  We’re all family at the track. It was a tough weekend, but I have to say the best medicine was being at the track Monday.  Anyone that asked how I was doing, how I felt, or shook my hand, thank you.  I can't list everyone, I can't remember everyone that did, but thank you. I always try to wish all the drivers in the Classic good luck before the race.  It was a feeling I will never forget, to have all of them be concerned how things were with me, just minutes before strapping in for their biggest race of the year.

Mike Cook, Paulie Conzone "Sideroads", Jim Bernys and Charlie Haws,  I owe you guys.  If there is anyone I missed here, sorry. Guys, a handshake and a "it’s what we do", just isn’t enough.  You guys aren’t only the best safety crew in the world, you’re awesome friends.  George Feeney, thanks for your thoughtfulness.  My wife and kids appreciated it big time. The guys at the track that worked on my truck to make it drivable, you were awesome.  I had no idea where it was Sunday night, or what was going on with it, but I did know with you guys it was in great hands.

Sue Gioia, you are a special lady.  I can’t thank you enough for your trips into my room.  You had more important things on your mind and your kindness will never be forgotten.  Stacey, it was nice to finally talk with you.  Next time will be under better circumstances.  Stephen, thanks for coming over, and great run Monday!  Steve, hope you keep improving quickly.  You were one of the best ever on the track, but you’re much more of a great guy off the Speedway.  You’re sense of humor was much appreciated, and you really are a one of a kind guy in my eyes.  If there is anything I can do, please let me know. Pat Furlong, seeing you Sunday night was a very nice surprise.  Lee, I appreciate everything you did as well.  Please know how much I think of what you did. Steve Pryor, thanks for taking care of things.  You and Bette have been friends for years. Roy and Joe, thanks for telling Sandra you would take care of me Monday.  It’s been an honor to have you guys take me under your wings, and teach me some tricks of the trade from the best short track announcers anywhere.  Bobby Gangwer, thanks for pinch hitting.  I can’t think of anyone else I would want to help out like you did bud. Craig Tyrrell, you were unbelievable.  You have a thankless job, all hard work and zero glory to it.  The people that know you, know how special a guy you are.  Thank you so much.

Everyone in the Supermodified world knows him as Pinner, to me he’s my brother Mike.  He drew the short straw and was asked to call my wife.  Sandra has been through a lot, and Mike knew this wasn’t an easy call, but he found just the right words to let her know things were under control.  I‘m proud not only to call him my brother, but also my best friend. My mom and dad showed up before I even knew it, and my brother Bernie and sisters Sue and Kathy were invaluable too.  They took control of things, everything from my truck to rides to doctor appointments or anything else imaginable, and just being there. In a world where many families aren’t close, mine is one of a kind, and I realize just how lucky of a guy I am. Sandra, sorry to have you make that ride to the hospital.  I know it wasn’t easy for you.  You have handled this whole thing like a trooper.  I know you thought I was nuts to want to go back Monday.  Honestly, it was the best medicine. Anne, thanks for being there for us. Denise, hope you’re doing ok.  I hope to see you Tim and AJ soon.

Next weekend we’ll take a look at the races on the track, but sometimes, off the track things take priority.  This was one of those times, and one last time, thanks again to everyone that helped out, asked, or thought about us.  It really was appreciated.

Racing is a rare sport.  The people are even more special.  I can’t think of any sport that has the heartfelt support the way our sport does.  I’ve always loved Oswego Speedway and all the people associated with it.  I’m proud to be an Oswego Speedway "race person".  I may not live in Oswego anymore, but Oswego always will be home.

See you at the races.
