OSWEGO, NY (August 2) – With the winners share of $11,500 on the line as a part of Mr. Supermodified/Mr. SBS on Saturday, August 4 between the Novelis Supermodified and Pathfinder Bank SBS Series, the championship battles continue to heat up as well.  Otto Sitterly (Supermodified) and Mike Bond (SBS) lead the title chases, but only by a combined 16 points over Pat Lavery and Andrew Schartner.

Sitterly, with two wins on the season in Novelis Supermodified competition, has led the championship since his opening night victory back on May 5.  Another win on May 26 gave Sitterly a commanding lead at one point this season, but two DNF’s in the month of June left Sitterly vulnerable and Lavery was able to take advantage.

In eight races this season Lavery has yet to finish outside of the Top10, something no other driver in the series has managed.  Sitterly, Joey Payne, and Brian Sobus each have six Top10 finishes this season, but Lavery has led the way in the consistency category.  Compound that with consecutive Top5 finishes in the last two Novelis Supermodified main events, and Lavery now rides just seven points behind Sitterly in the championship standings.

Randy Ritskes, Payne, and Ray Graham are all within 61 points of the championship lead with three point races remaining in the regular season.

In the Pathfinder Bank SBS Series, Bond started the season on a tough note.  A broken rear suspension piece just before the May 5 opening night feature, relegated Bond to an 18th place finish to open the season.  Since that time Bond has yet to finish outside of the Top10, with six Top5 finishes and one feature win coming on June 30.  A 10th place finish on Friday night of Race of Champions Weekend, coupled with a Schartner win and a Kreig Heroth DNS has changed the landscape of the title chase altogether.

Heading into the July 20 event Heroth had finished in the Top10 in every event this season, and was hot on the heels of Bond for the championship.  However, a blown motor in his qualifying heat race forced Heroth out of the main event before it even started and now pushes him back to 4th in the standings, 38 points behind.

Schartner’s win on July 20, his first of the season, draws him right back into the hunt only nine points shy of Bond.  After a lackluster finish on June 30, Schartner appeared to be out of the battle for the title, but now is right back in it with three races remaining.

Rob Pullen and Jason Simmons fill out the Top5 in the SBS standings.  Pullen is only 27 out of the lead in 3rd, while Simmons rides 5th, 70 points shy of Bond.
