OSWEGO, NY (August 20, 2013) – Graham Racing announced this week their intentions to field a Novelis Supermodified entry for winged sprint car veteran Jessica Zemken in the 57th running of the Budweiser International Classic 200 at Oswego Speedway on Labor Day weekend.
Zemken will join Sheila Hayes and Jennifer Chesbro as the only women to attempt to qualify for Supermodified racing’s most historical and largest paying event.
Neither Hayes, who was the first woman to attempt to qualify in 1970, nor Chesbro were able to qualify for the International Classic.
Zemken’s qualifying attempt in the Graham Racing No. 11 Supermodified will not be her first try at Supermodified racing. In May of 2012, Zemken qualified a Graham Racing Supermodified on opening night at Oswego Speedway, but she was sidelined with mechanical issues just 11-laps into the event.
While Zemken is scheduled to qualify as No. 11, it is unclear at this point as to which of the two Graham Racing machines she will pilot.
Early indications point toward Zemken fielding the Hawk Chassis Supermodified that Johnny Benson Jr. ran in the 2012 edition of the Budweiser International Classic as No. 11.
Benson turned a lap of 16.573 seconds in first round time trial one year ago, qualifying the ride 11th fastest of the 37 entries. Issues with the right front corner of the racecar brought Benson pit side last year after only 67-laps with a 31st place finish.
The other machine in the Graham stable is the No. 21 Xtreme Chassis, driven to victory earlier this season by Kody Graham and twice to victory lane in 2012 by his father Ray Graham as No. 90.
Kody has been sidelined for the remainder of the season after a winged Supermodified crash at the Speedway on July 13, making Ray and Zemken teammates heading into the International Classic on September 1.
A total of four International Classic test sessions have been designated by Speedway management the week leading up to Classic Weekend.
Sessions will run from 4-8pm August 26-28, with a fourth scheduled August 29 from 11am-3pm.
Graham Racing is scheduled to take part in all four sessions, with more information on ride selection likely coming after those tests.
Zemken will make her first attempt to qualify for the International Classic during Corr-Pak Merchandising ‘Fast 14’ first round time trials at the Speedway on Friday, August 30. Qualifying attempts will begin at 6:15pm on August 30 with the fastest 14 Novelis Supermodifieds locked into the International Classic 200 on September 1.
Second round Supermodified time trials will take place at noon on Sunday, September 1 locking in starters 15-28. Those who were unable to make it into the top 28 spots after two rounds of time trials will compete in the 20-lap Bud Light B-Main qualifier to fill the final six spots for the International Classic 200, which will take the green flag at approximately 3pm that Sunday.
Budweiser International Classic Week runs from August 28-September 1 with the Race of Champions Asphalt Modified 100 joining ‘Fast 14’ Supermodified time trials on August 30.
The August 31 line-up features the final round of the Shea Concrete ‘Steel Palace’ ISMA SuperSeries with the Bud Light ISMA SuperNationals 60, the Bud Light SBS Classic 75, and the ATQMRA TQ Midget Classic.
