Russ Brown Battles to Summer Championship Title in SBS Return
By Oswego Speedway @ 9:08 PM :: 810 Views

OSWEGO, NY (July 21, 2014) – Five-time and defending Pathfinder Bank Small Block Super champion Russ Brown went into semi-retirement after collecting last season’s division championship.  However, taking some time away from the track in no way slowed Brown down, as the driver of the Hedger Fabrication No. 13 stormed through the field on Saturday night in his first start of the season to claim the Speedway’s Summer Championship victory presented by C’s Beverage Center and Crop Production Services.

Brown started the 30-lap main from the eleventh position, took the lead from Hedger Fabrication partner Kreig Heroth on a lap 26 restart, and never looked back on his way to his 20th career Small Block Super triumph.

Heroth took his Won 4 Racing No. 04 to second position followed by rookie standout Matt Magner, JJ Andrews, and Rob Pullen in the top five.

Brown, who will be back in action for the $1,500 to win Mr. Pathfinder Bank Small Block Super event on August 2, says his runs at the Speedway are all in preparation for the Bud Light Small Block Super Classic coming on August 30.

“I was watching Kreig (Heroth) there on the couple restarts we had and he was sliding up the race track,” said Brown in Turning Stone Resort Casino Victory Lane.  “So, I just backed my corner up there a little bit and got a better run on him, that’s all.  Kreig ran a great race, and our new car runs good, it’s all good.  We still have some bugs to work out of it, but all in all it was a good night, a good way to return.”

Anthony Losurdo, Dalton Doyle, rookie Jesse Bearup, Josh Kerr, and David LaTulip finished the top ten positions in Saturday’s Summer Championship.

The Summer Championship was scheduled to see 20-cars take the green flag, however feature winner Jon Tesoriero scratched from the event, leading 19 racers set to take the Cam’s NY Pizzeria green flag with Heroth and Doyle starting from the front row.

Heroth got the jump on the start, moving to the No. 04 to the point with rookie driver Magner following to second after starting in the third position.

Heroth and Magner quickly jumped away from the field, but it was Brown making all the right moves early on in the No. 13, driving all the way to the third position by lap five diving under Doyle in turn three.

By the halfway point of the 30-lap event Heroth, Magner, and Brown were in a freight train at the front of the pack, racing away from all contenders.

However, a lap 17 caution for a spinning Kerr on the back straight, would tighten the field for a restart with Heroth leading Magner, Brown, Doyle, Andrews, Alex Hoag, Mike Bruce, Andrew Schartner, and Pullen.

With green lights back on Doyle was shuffled to the high side of the Speedway in the No. 01, losing several spots, and dropping back to the tenth position.

Once back into a rhythm, the front three continued much as they had the entire event with Brown and Magner vigorously chasing Heroth for the lead.

At lap 25 another caution would wave, this time for point leaders Schartner and Jack Patrick, who tangled into the third corner battling for top ten positions.  Schartner would continue on in the event for a 13th place finish while Patrick was done for the night in 18th.

The upcoming restarts saw Brown earn his pay day, as the No. 13 dove under Magner for second on the back straight before another caution waved for Hoag and Bruce tangling in corners one and two running fifth and sixth.

The next restart saw Brown slide by race leader Heroth to take the point off of corner number four, and with that, Brown drove away to the win over Heroth, Magner, Andrews, and Pullen.

Heroth, who continues to work hard to try and attract Supermodified teams for the upcoming Budweiser International Classic 200 on August 31, moved to second in the point standings with his first podium finish of 2014.

“You know, that’s tough, but if I am going to come in second to anyone I would want it to be Russ (Brown),” said Heroth.  “He is good, coming in like that and running that way in his first start of the season, but we are happy anyway considering our finishes this year.”

Magner, a rookie in the division with dirt racing experience, drove the No. 2 solid all night with an outstanding result.

“I’m a little hungrier now, but I am happy, I just don’t have a lot of laps here,” said Magner.  “To finish third like that, with two really good guys in front of me, I am happy right now.  We can build on this.  We’re still trying to learn you know and pick up from other people, but we’ll figure it out.”

Heroth, Hoag, and Jason Simmons collected Shell Shock Custom Helmet Paint Heat Race Challenge victories.

Magner was the Nice Price Auto Sales Up and Comer while Brown collected the D&S Landscaping Hard Charger award.

Heroth would collect the Sherwood Racing Wheels Lap Leader Award with Andrews also being awarded the White’s Car Care 4th Place finishers prize.
