Leading SBS Driver to Earn Final Guaranteed International Classic Qualifying Spot

OSWEGO, NY (March 11, 2014) – Just days after announcing a return to guaranteed driver status for the 58th annual Budweiser International Classic 200, Oswego Speedway announced this week that the final guaranteed driver position in Supermodified racing’s most prestigious event will go the Speedway’s leading Pathfinder Bank SBS driver at the conclusion of their June 21 main event.

The SBS driver that leads the division’s driver standings after June 21 will earn a qualifying spot provided that driver first attempts to qualify for the International Classic during first round time trials on Friday, August 29 and is also then within .4 of a second of the 28th fastest time trialer after taking part in second round time trials on Sunday, August 31.

The guaranteed driver will be responsible for making their own arrangements to field a Supermodified for Budweiser International Classic Weekend.

The SBS, or Limited Super division, debuted at Oswego Speedway in 1992 as a tool to help develop drivers to make the transition to Novelis Supermodified racing at the ‘Steel Palace.’

Since that time nearly 30 SBS drivers have taken the green flag in the International Classic, with Russ Brown being the first to do so in 1994 after qualifying 9th fastest in the field of 51 Supermodifieds.

The most recent graduate to take the leap is now 3-time Novelis Supermodified main event winner Dave Danzer, who finished 4th as a rookie in the 2011 running of the Classic.  Danzer’s run came just one year after SBS veterans Brian Sobus, Dave Gruel, and Dave Cliff all made their first Classic starts in 2010.

In the two years since Danzer first qualified his family owned No. 52 Supermodified, no other SBS driver has made the move to the Supermodified ranks and started the International Classic.

“As one of the drivers to have made the transition from SBS racing to Supermodified racing, I know the importance of the SBS class in helping to boost drivers to our elite division at the Speedway,” said Oswego Speedway PR Director, Dan Kapuscinski.  “We have a great crop of drivers in our SBS division, young drivers and experienced drivers, which given the right opportunity could make for a great story in this year’s Classic.  One deserving driver is going to have a unique opportunity this year, provided they meet the criteria and are able to land a ride for the weekend.”

In another recent announcement, teams that do not qualify through first or second round time trials and are unable to fall back on guaranteed status, will earn a minimum of $500 to start the weekend’s Bud Light B-Main on Sunday, August 31 in their final attempt to qualify for the International Classic.

Last season’s eventual Pathfinder Bank SBS track champion, Russ Brown, would have been the division’s guaranteed starter in the Budweiser International Classic in 2013.

The International Classic qualifying trail for the SBS division will span seven events starting with opening day on Saturday, May 3 in conjunction with the first round of the Steel Palace ISMA Super Series at the Speedway.

Other events include the Memorial Day Weekend Tony White Memorial, the May 31 Spring Championship, and Supermodified Twin 35 night on June 21.
